Always wanted to have your artwork exhibited? Here’s your chance! The following workshops are scheduled prior to the festival. Artworks created at these workshops will become part of the exhibitions and sculptural installations!
GhostNets
WORKSHOP - 14th - 26th September

Join renowned Queensland artist Sue Ryan, director of the Ghost Nets Art Project, who will be the Festival’s resident artist. Together with local artists and crafters in the Whitsundays, Mackay and Isaac, Sue will create the main sculptural installation of suspended flying fish made from marine and other debris.

LANTERN
WORKSHOP - 28 & 29 September 2020
Full Day or Half Day

Be part of the festival opening event - a spectacular lantern parade along the foreshore of Airlie Beach. Hundreds of school children will have made a lantern through our school lantern making workshops. This is an opportunity to learn the technique of making larger lanterns from skilled practitioners. Then create your own themed (the environment) lantern to carry in the parade.
Marion Gaemers
SCULPTURE INSTALLATION
Come visit the installation at the festival! Renowned weaver and fabric artist Marion Gaemers conducted workshops with local Whitsunday artists and craftspeople in early 2020. Marion demonstrated various weaving and stitching skills enabling participants to produce beautiful circles.

Local and international artists will be conducting a range of workshops under the large marquee on the foreshore 4th - 5th October 2020. Once you have purchased your ticket, your name will appear on our guest list. Please ‘check in’ at the beginning of the workshop.
Ink Drawing with Ron McBurnie
This workshop will introduce participants to white ink on black or darker toned papers. Learn from internationally renowned artist Ron McBurnie the processes and approaches he uses when working with a dip pen. It will primarily focus on adapting these techniques to an en plain air (outdoor/ landscape) drawing made from life.

Sibori
Learn the traditional Japanese dying techniques of Shibori with artist Jinni Oupatham. Using specific folding, binding, and dip-dyeing techniques, create five sample squares and one major piece.
Completing her Bachelor of Arts in Thailand, Jinni majored in drawing, sculpture, and painting before completing an additional year to become a Master Artist in Batik Art.

Photography
Professional Photographers Chris Dalton and Glenda Beverly will prove to you there is more to your camera than just ‘auto mode’

Street Art
Are you the next Banksy? Tap into your inner street artist with this workshop. Explore street art techniques with experienced artist and facilitator Sandra Guy. She will introduce you to her popular stenciling and spray painting process. In this workshop, you will create your own artwork learning stenciling and spray painting techniques in the process.
Completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts with a major in Printmaking in 2003; Sandy possesses extensive experience in facilitating art classes to all ages. Her personality and energy is as popular as her art style!

Aboriginal Mural Painting
Children will paint alongside renowned Aboriginal artist Nicky Bidju Pryor on a mural as they learn about Nicky’s techniques and inspiration for his paintings. An example of Nicky’s work is the large-scale mural on the outside of the expanded Proserpine Airport.
Nicky Bidju Pryor is a Juru traditional owner in the Bowen area, from the Birri Gubba nation on his Grandfather's side and a Gunggandji traditional owner from Yarrabah on his Grandmother's side. Nicky is proud of his Aboriginal heritage and really wants to share his love and understanding of his culture.
Much of Nicky’s artwork is designed to bridge modern and traditional cultures.

Deadly Weaving
Participants will learn how to weave a simple bracelet with natural fibres utilising a traditional Aboriginal weaving technique.
Deadly Weavers - Felicity Chapman and Leanne Odd will be facilitating the workshop. Felicity Chapman is a proud Wiradjuri woman who has been treading lightly on Gia and Ngaro countries for the past 18 years. Felicity is committed to learning, honouring and preserving the ancient Aboriginal culture. Felicity is a member of the Deadly Weaver group and a Visual Storyteller who is passionate about gently reconnecting people to their culture through Traditional Aboriginal weaving. After attending a natural fibre Traditional Aboriginal Weaving Workshop with experienced Aboriginal artist Ronnie Jordan, Leanne quickly added weaving to her extensive range of artistic accomplishments.
