Dancenorth is one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies having presented work in over 35 International Arts Festivals and venues around Australia and the world and is an integral part of the Australian dance scene.
Alongside the professional ensemble and touring productions sits an equally vital pillar of focus, the Community Experience Projects.
WORKSHOP FORMAT
Part workshop, part dance party, Dancenorth workshops for the Whitsundays Arts Festival will energise the body and inspire the spirit. Workshops will include popular Dance Break followed by a creative workshop session designed to share insight into Dancenorth’s creative process.
Dance Break encourages participants to focus on how movement feels in the body, rather than what it looks like from the outside. Gently, this experience encourages freedom and joy of movement rather than concern with being ‘good’ at dancing, or getting the steps ‘right’. Following Dance Break, Dancenorth facilitators will guide participants through a creative task that continues to encourage and inspire physical and creative expression.
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Alice Lee Holland is an Australian dance artist with a breadth of experience as a mover, maker, educator, mentor and leader. As Artistic Director, Alice led STEPS Youth Dance Company through its pivotal final chapter. Highlights include – seven nominations for the Australian Dance Awards including the 2015 winner Fights & Flights, Trois Generations and A Midsummer Nights Dream for the 2013 and 2014 Perth Festivals, and presentations at the Dance and the Child International Congress (Taiwan 2012, Copenhagen 2015). As Resident Director for Circa Contemporary Circus, Alice was instrumental to Depart – a production commissioned by the London International Festival of Theatre.
Alice has mentored a generation of young dancers as a sessional lecturer at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the Victorian College of the Arts, and inspired communities to dance through projects for organisations including Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council (WA) and Dancehouse (VIC). Most recently, she created SIMULCAST for Chunky Move at the 2019 Dance Massive Festival – a solo for James O’Hara and 300 community dancers age 8-80. SIMULCAST was presented for the second time in Bendigo in October, featuring Daniel Riley and a local cast of 60.
Alice relocated to Townsville in 2019, to work with Dancenorth Australia as the company’s Community Experience Manager.
