2021 Art Exhibition

The Whitsundays Arts Festival is committed to nourishing and encouraging the development of a significant arts culture in the Whitsundays region.

 

The Art Exhibition will be held in Fairy Tree Park on the Airlie Beach Foreshore from 17-19th September. The theme for this year was ‘Reflecting on Place.’

Prize Judge

Judge – Tracey Heathwood, Director, Artspace Mackay

Tracey Heathwood has worked in the regional arts sector in Queensland or more than 20 years including positions with Flying Arts Inc., Artspace Mackay, Crossroad Arts Inc. and Mackay Regional Council.

Her appointment as Director of Artspace Mackay in January 2018 saw her return to regional galleries after working as a freelance curator, project manager and arts consultant. In her role as Artspace Mackay Gallery Director, Tracey leads a team of professional gallery staff in providing a high-quality community facility; an inspirational exhibition program; a growing, relevant art collection and engaging public programs. Central to the role is the implementation and coordination of effective and efficient policies and practices relevant to the gallery and its programs, with the aim of providing the community of Mackay and visitors to the region access to high-quality arts and cultural development programs. Tracey holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Fine Art from the Queensland College of Art and is a practicing printmaker.

  • Irene Mengel

    Aspire Gallery

    Irene is currently Manager of Aspire Gallery, a Brisbane-based Commercial Gallery that supports emerging artists across Australia and collaborates regularly with a range of organisations. As well as regularly being involved with the mentoring of emerging artists and developing a program that provides ‘Business Advice to the Arts’, Irene currently sits of the Board of Arts From the Margins - a creative initiative of Wesley Mission Queensland. In late 2020, Irene was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Queensland. So to marry her cross-industry experience, she is currently undertaking a Masters of Philosophy in Art Economics, focusing on the selfsufficiency and sustainability of the Australian Arts Market. More recently, Irene has also became a consultant for a national online platform, managing the collaborations with Indigenous Artists & Art Centres.

  • Jan Manton

    Jan Manton Gallery

    Jan Manton is Director of Jan Manton Gallery is a long time supporter of the visual arts in Queensland. Jan is currently Vice-Chair on both the Queensland Children’s Hospital Arts Program and the Arts from the Margins boards. In the past Jan has held positions in other not-for-profit organisations including President of Flying Arts Alliance, member of the QUT Art Collection Committee, member of the Steering Committee for the Harries Digital Art Award, and member of Caboolture Shire Council Art Collection Committee. Jan was appointed as Chair of the fundraising campaign for the QUT Art Museum in 2004, and supports young artists through the Byran-Manton Art Prize for QUT Visual Art Graduates.
