Artist residency and photography workshop with Kim Percy in Hydeaway Bay

Whitsundays Arts Festival is thrilled to announce that the ARI Whitsundays Artist-in-Residence is photographer, PhD candidate, and university lecturer, Kim Percy.

Artist-in-residence Kim Percy

ARI Whitsundays is a member of the international organisation and worldwide network of artist residencies Res Artis. This year’s residency with Kim follows in the footsteps of the highly successful community papermaking and natural ink workshop by artist-in-residence Nathalie Hartog-Gautier in 2023.

Kim Percy is a multi-disciplinary artist working within the space of social change. She has exhibited in many festivals and awards. Over her 30-year career, she has had many solo exhibitions, including a solo exhibition in New York in 2016. Kim is currently undergoing a PhD, researching dyslexia from a visual art perspective and is a lecturer at Federation University.

This year, as part of her residency, Kim will present a free artist talk at the Gloucester Sport & Recreation Association in Hydeaway Bay and lead a ticketed ‘Visualising through photography’ workshop, guiding photography enthusiasts in an exploration of the local environment along the Hydeaway Bay foreshore.

Artist Talk

Join Kim as she discusses her artistic practice and approach to photography. A neurodiverse artist, Kim has developed strategies to create a professional life as an artist, designer, and university lecturer. These masking strategies are complex, habitual, and deeply ingrained. An interdisciplinary artist, Kim’s photography reflects an accurate representation of her internal musings through images of place, people, and abstraction. Kim will also share slides of her work and answer questions.

Community members are invited to attend this free artist talk at the Gloucester Sport & Recreation Association in Hydeaway Bay on Saturday 12 October, 9am – 9:45am. Tea and coffee will be provided. The artist talk component is a free event, but it is recommended to RSVP your place via email.

‘Visualising through photography’ Workshop

Kim will share her expertise and guide attendees in photographing the Hydeaway Bay foreshore. The workshop is not a lecture but an interactive exploration of the world through photography. Bring a camera or a smartphone and your curious mind to spend time looking, thinking, and considering the act of photography. In this day where 75 million images are uploaded each day, do we really understand what photography is? How we see through the lens is more than the technical; it is about the questions we ask and the actions we take. This workshop is for everyone, whether you are a keen professional, a hobbyist or interested in creative thinking. Join artist and researcher Kim Percy to delve into photography, art, and ways of seeing the world around us.

The workshop will follow the 9am artist talk at Gloucester Sport & Recreation Association in Hydeaway Bay on Saturday 12 October, and runs until 12:30pm. The cost for the workshop is $20 and has limited places – register now. Please bring your camera or smartphone and wear suitable footwear for walking. Please contact Whitsundays Arts Festival with any queries.
