Whitsundays Arts Festival 2022

Kids Arts Workshops

The Whitsundays Arts Festival welcomes a new addition to the Foreshore Festivities Day on Sunday 25 September: Kids Arts Workshops. The Kids Workshop program promises to be a fun and creative activity for families. From 9am-4pm in a specially allocated marquee, the Festival is offering several varied activities as drop-in sessions, as well as two sessions where registration is required. All of our activities for children are free.

The workshops have been designed for children by two resident Festival artists, local children’s book writer and illustrator Sofia Fortunato from Little Red House and Townsville artist Lisa Ashcroft who was last year’s winner of the inaugural Whitsundays Art Prize.

As well as the workshop program, kids can get involved throughout the Festivities day in featured interactive activities including African drumming with Festival favourites Baala Baajo, and ukulele playing with Rebel Uke Players, as well as enjoying Tchundal Malar Aboriginal Dancers with firelighting and didgeridoo!

The Kids Workshops Program is made possible through the generous support of BHP.

  • Making Sea Creatures from Paper Clay and Felt Texters

What is your favourite sea memory? From sea turtles, stingrays, and jelly fish to surfboarders and boats, join Lisa and use paper clay to create your sculpture. Just air dry your creation at home, no water, no mess, just good fun.

  • Memorable Illustrated Portrait

In this workshop with Sofia, kids will create a self-portrait using only three colours for the background and a sharpie for the face. The representation of the portrait will be in their own style. The idea is to loosen up their minds and to draw from memory too.

  • The Memory Tree

In this workshop with Sofia, kids will have the opportunity to learn to illustrate a tree with collage paper technique; using scissors, glue, and lots of colourful paper. Among the tree branches, children will recreate a special memory inside a frame. Other details and features can be added to their creation as their inspiration arises.

Kids visiting the marquee will have the opportunity to participate in a group abstract painting with Lisa on a large canvas with the theme ‘memories.’ We will use bright fluoro and all sorts of brushes, palette knives, willow sticks, scrunched up bits of paper, drips etc. Kids will have the freedom to express themselves in a fun way.
